Winter Self-Care: Embracing the Season with Nourishment and Joy
Winter can often feel like a time of hibernation, but for me, it’s an opportunity to lean into practices that nurture my body, mind, and soul. Over the years, I’ve developed a winter self-care routine that keeps me grounded, energized, and joyful even on the coldest days. Here are some of my favorite ways to take care of myself during the winter months, along with the benefits they bring.
1. Starting My Day with Red Light Therapy, Meditation, and Yoga
Kicking off my mornings with red light therapy, meditation, and yoga sets a calming yet energizing tone for the day. Red light therapy is a game-changer; it boosts collagen production, improves circulation, and enhances mood—perfect for combating the winter blues. Pairing this with meditation and yoga helps center my mind, increase flexibility, and reduce stress, leaving me feeling balanced and ready to tackle whatever comes my way.
2. Dancing in the Kitchen
There’s something magical about turning up my favorite playlist and dancing while cooking. It’s an effortless way to add movement to my day while infusing joy into a mundane task. Dancing releases endorphins, which improve mood, and it’s also a great way to connect with my inner child.
3. Going to the Gym and Lifting Weights
Strength training at the gym keeps me feeling strong and empowered. Lifting weights improves muscle tone, boosts metabolism, and enhances bone density, which is especially important during the darker months when we’re not as active outdoors.
4. Eating a Balanced Diet
As someone who has explored vegetarian and pescetarian diets, I’ve learned the importance of incorporating essential vitamins and minerals, even those found in meat. Balancing my diet with nutrient-dense foods—like leafy greens, legumes, nuts, and fish—ensures my body and mind function optimally. I also prioritize staying away from processed foods and sugars while leaning into cravings in a mindful way. For example, I’ll swap out sugary snacks for dark chocolate or fresh fruit, giving my body the nutrients it craves without the crash. During the winter, I also incorporate immunity shots into my routine to help protect my metabolism and strengthen my immune system. These shots, packed with ginger, turmeric, and citrus, are a quick and effective way to keep my body resilient. As someone who has explored vegetarian and pescetarian diets, I’ve learned the importance of incorporating essential vitamins and minerals, even those found in meat. 5. Soaking Up Sunshine and Fresh Air
Even in winter, I make it a point to step outside daily. The fresh air clears my mind, and soaking up sunlight helps regulate my circadian rhythm and boosts vitamin D levels, which are crucial for mood and immune health. Bundling up and going for a walk, even if it’s brief, makes a world of difference.
6. Salt Room Sessions
Salt therapy has become one of my favorite winter indulgences. Sitting in a salt room helps improve respiratory health, reduces inflammation, and enhances relaxation. It’s a soothing retreat from the cold and a wonderful way to support overall wellness.
7. Time with Family
Being present with my family is a cornerstone of my self-care. Whether it’s playing board games, watching movies, or simply talking, these moments of connection fill my heart and recharge my spirit. Doing fun activities with my son and partner, like building snowmen or playing games, brings out the little Marina in me and lets me embrace the joy of being a kid again.
8. Joining a Dance Class
I’ve always loved dancing, and this winter, I finally took the leap and signed up for a dance class at Release in Ferndale. I joined the Absolute Beginners course this month, and I’m thrilled to continue with it throughout the year. Dancing has always been a passion of mine, and I’m excited to see how this journey unfolds and helps me grow both physically and creatively.
9. Reading Books That Inspire Me
Winter is the perfect time to curl up with a good book. Reading stimulates my mind and gives me an escape, whether I’m diving into a thought-provoking non-fiction piece or an imaginative novel.
10. Journaling and Deepening My Practices
Journaling has become a powerful tool for reflection and growth. It allows me to process my thoughts, set intentions, and deepen my self-awareness. Winter’s quieter pace provides the perfect backdrop for exploring and expanding my practices, whether through mindfulness, creativity, or spiritual growth.
11. Laughing More
Laughter truly is the best medicine. I make it a point to find moments of joy and humor, whether it’s through watching a funny movie, sharing jokes with loved ones, or simply not taking myself too seriously. Laughing boosts endorphins and brings a lighthearted energy to the day.
12. Visiting the Schvitz and Sauna
Regular visits to the schvitz or sauna are essential for detoxing and relaxation. The heat improves circulation, eases muscle tension, and supports overall cardiovascular health. It’s a luxurious way to combat the cold and feel revitalized.
13. Switching to Golden Milk
In the mornings, I’ve traded my coffee for golden milk made with Anima Mundi’s blend. This warm, spiced drink is packed with turmeric, which has anti-inflammatory properties, and other adaptogens that promote energy and vitality. It’s a soothing yet invigorating start to the day.
14. Working on My Business
Pouring energy into my business, Nurture and Nature LLC, is deeply fulfilling. It allows me to channel my creativity and passion into supporting others while also nurturing my personal growth.
15. Prioritizing Rest and Reflection
Winter reminds me to slow down and honor the need for rest. Whether it’s through an evening of journaling, a long bath, or simply going to bed earlier, I’ve learned that rest is as important as action.
These practices form the foundation of my winter self-care routine, helping me thrive in what can often feel like a challenging season. By prioritizing activities that nourish my body, mind, and spirit, I’m able to stay energized, joyful, and present—no matter how cold or dark it gets outside.
